  • Khadas New VIM2 - Thermal Performance Review

Introduction With the New VIM2 (v1.4) on the way, we decided to show you the improved thermal performance and noise reduction of the 3705 Cooling Fan and New VIM Heatsink. Remember that the New VIM2 (v1.4) is only compatible with the 3705 Cooling Fan and New VIM Heatsink. It will not work with the 3004 Cooling Fan and VIM Heatsink. Thermal Probe Installation Before I began my investigation, I had to install a thermal probe above the SoC. I couldn't install it directly on the SoC, so I chose to locate it above the pink thermal pad. SoC = Probe T2 The second probe, Probe T1, was left hanging freely in the air to monitor the ambient temperature, which fluctuates wildly this time of year (spring)... Air = Probe T1. Upon booting into Android, you could see that the Amlogic S912 SoC was already about 5 degrees celsius hotter than ambient. Fan-Off, YouTube Playback, Sealed DIY Case My first test was to keep the fan turned off, and playback some YouTube videos via Google Chrome. Many of our TV Box users like to keep the fan turned off (or sometimes they buy a VIM2 without a fan, with just the heatsink). Passive cooling is the quietest method of cooling, as it doesn't involve spinning motors, forced convection, and the buffeting of high speed air... For this test, not only was the fan turned off, but I had completely sealed-up the DIY Case. This replicates the experience of TV box users who are also concerned with having a good-looking, aesthetically pleasing TV box at home. Temperatures reached 60C (degrees celsius) after 30 minutes of YouTube playback, at an ambient air temperature of 31C. The DIY Case felt warm to the touch, however not alarmingly so. The DIY Case has a hole at the top for warm air to rise through. Fan-On, YouTube Playback, Sealed DIY Case Next, I turned the fan on to the lowest speed, with the DIY Case completely sealed. Temperatures cooled down to an acceptable 39C, at an ambient temperature of 30C. Fan-On, CPU Stress Test, Sealed DIY Case Logically, the next test was to leave the fan on and run a 8-core CPU stress test, which would be more comprehensive than just watching YouTube videos. After 30 minutes, temperatures had stabilised around 42.7C, at an ambient temperature of 25C. The DIY Case felt slightly warm at this point, and the quiet hiss of out-rushing air could be heard. It's possible that at 30C, SoC temperatures could be closer to 45C. Fan-On, CPU Stress Test, Opened DIY Case Opening the DIY Case lowered the SoC temperature to 38C, with the heatsink temperature at 36C (see picture, where I had stuck the probe into the heatsink). For intensive tasks, you may still want to open up the case. In the next section, let's explore another option. Fred21's Modification, Fan-On, YouTube Playback A user on the Khadas Forum, Fred21, recommended placing a piece of stiff paper behind the heatsink, and then leaving a small gap between the top-cover and bottom-case for better ventilation. Here are the results of his modification - Fred21's Forum Post. With the lid slightly propped up, and the thick paper behind the heatsink, temperatures dropped to about 37C during Android YouTube playback, at an ambient temperature of 27C. Well done Fred21! Tone Board, New VIM2, Fan Off, YouTube Playback Finally, to end-off this blog post, lets get to the thermal-arch-enemy; stacking a Tone Board on top of a VIM2, inside a DIY Case, with the fan turned off, whilst playing YouTube videos. After about 30 minutes of playback, temperatures stabilised at 62C, at an ambient of 28C. It's likely that with other ROMs (e.g. CoreELEC, Volumio), you could see temperatures stabilise at 70C. With the fan-on, temperatures dipped back down to the high 40s. In conclusion, with the Tone Board mounted, you're better off keeping the 3705 Cooling Fan set to speed 1 (lowest setting), to keep everything reasonably cool with the least noise. And maybe add a sheet of paper behind the heatsink to let the hot-air out quicker too (Fred21's Modification). Quick Video Summary YouTube video of a quick 1-minute summary of the different testing phases, which you can also watch on your VIM2. Pardon the 1080P resolution, I did not have my 4K recording gear with me. Thanks for reading! Khadas Team

  • Khadas Shop - Pre Order Edge, Edge-V & New VIM2 v1.4

Our Khadas Shop has been updated with a new-look! And as you've requested, we've added the Edge, Edge-V + accessories up for pre-order too! We estimate that our Edge products should be ready to ship by March 2019. Also due to be released next month is the "New VIM2 SBC", version 1.4. This new VIM2 is designed to work with the "New VIM Heatsink" and "3705 Cooling Fan" to provide a more efficient and quieter cooling solution. In v1.4, hot air is ejected from the casing via the button-holes, rather than bouncing off the side wall in v1.1-v1.2. This results in faster airflow with less re-circulation, so hot air is not trapped within the casing. The lower temperatures allow the fan to run slower, and therefore produce less noise. Do note that at maximum speed, even though the fan motor itself is noiseless, you will definitely be able to hear the air as it buffets against the heatsink fins. For users who are worried about the ROM support, all images that you download from https://dl.khadas.com/Firmware/VIM2/ will be compatible with both v1.2 and v1.4. The ROM can identify the SBC via its Version ID. To see all changes between v1.2 and v1.4, read this PDF Guide. Thanks for your support, we hope to bring you more amazing products this year! • Indiegogo Update #3

Hi Everyone! Our campaign has finally ended after 60 days, and we're thrilled to have hit $20,855 USD in funding. Sure it's not that much, however its our first time on Indiegogo, so we'll consider this to be a learning experience! By now you guys are wondering how the development and manufacturing is coming along, so today we're going to share an update on our progress for the Edge, Edge-V, Captain, and the other accessories. Timeline Status: End of February (Before CNY): Edge-V v12 Battery Module 24W USB-C Adapter New VIMs Heatsink The "New VIM Heatsink" which will begin manufacturing in February, is stacked up on the left and is compatible with the Edge-V. • Edge-V (v11) + New VIMs Heatsink

In this blog post, we'll show you Edge-V (v11), as well as the New VIMs Heatsink which is compatible with both the Edge-V (v11) and 3705 Cooling Fan. What's the difference between Edge-V v11 and v10? Continue reading to find out more... Top View: Cooling fan header has been changed from a 2-pin to a 4-pin header. It is now compatible with the 3705 Cooling Fan. The gesture sensor has been shifted down till it's next to the IR sensor. This means it will not be blocked by the New VIM's Heatsink. Bottom View: You'll notice that the TP connector is now on the backside of the v11. It is also the exact same distance from the DSI connector, just as it is on the Captain. This means you can conveniently connect LCD displays to the Edge-V, as well as the Captain Carrier Board. The eDP connector has been moved upward to make space for the TP-connector. Perspective View: Immediately obvious is that we've replaced the GST5009M LF module with the significantly flatter Pulse H5120NL; It fulfils the same function, and at the same time allows us to mount the New VIM's Heatsink and 3705 Cooling Fan without obstruction. Result: Moving the gesture sensor, TP connector, and shrinking the height of the GST5009M LF module allows us to make adequate space for the beefier New VIM's Heatsink and more powerful 3705 Cooling Fan. Conclusion: Thanks everyone for reading! As always, if you have any comments and suggestions, please go to our forum: https://forum.khadas.com/c/Khadas-Edge Warmly, Khadas Team

  • Indiegogo Update #2

Hi Everyone! It is now Day 4 of our Indiegogo Campaign! There's been a lot of discussion about the Edge-1S, and some confusion on where to find it in our perk-list. Because of this, we've created an entirely new "featured perk" that has just the Edge-1S Pro (Basic and Max versions of the Edge-1S are not part of this campaign). What's The Difference? (1) The "Edge-1S Early Bird" featured perk is the safer and cheaper $199 perk option for the "Edge-1S Pro", the RK3399PRO SBC, however it will ship later in End April 2019. Time is required to work out both hardware and software bugs. It comes with 2 free accessories, the (1) Edge-IO and (2) Edge-Heatsink. (2) The riskier prototype-version "Edge-1S Developer" is more expensive at $299, however it will ship earlier in End January 2019. It comes bundled with more accessories, (1) Captain, (2) Edge-IO, (3) USB-C 24W Adapter + 1m Cable, (4) Edge Heatsink, (5) 3705 Cooling Fan. The Developer version is meant for ODM Companies and Developers to get their hands on a developer board early, in order to kickstart their projects. SBC Reviewers who want an early sample of the board could back this too. Gouwa Demos The RK3399Pro SoC In the video below, you can watch Gouwa demo 2 main product features of the RK3399Pro SoC. (1) Object Detection, and the second is (2) Posture Detection. The SoC does produce a lot of heat, so a heatsink is definitely recommended. Thanks everyone for supporting us so far, and we look forward to building these wonderful new boards for you, so that you can achieve your dreams faster and back us on Indiegogo! Warmly, Khadas Team

  • Indiegogo - Edge Progress Update

Summary of our progress thus far! Hi Everyone! Many of you must be wondering why we haven't launched yet, despite it being October 15th! Our main goal with this campaign is to launch with Edge as ready-as-possible, so we're continuing to do small production runs, testing, and continuing to collect feedback. Above you'll see a video of the Edge's rear-side SMT mounting at the factory! NextC Case for Edge (RK3399) and Edge 1S (RK3399Pro) Here is the NextC case for the Edge SBC! It looks cool doesn't it? Currently still in the prototyping phase, we should have a CNC-machined version of it sometime in the next few days. Below are some renders / pictures for your enjoyment. Our designer's assistant spent several painstaking hours getting that render to look perfect. She's quite amazing, and very determined! These drawings were actually done on a Samsung tablet. No paper was injured in the process of designing the NextC case. Final 3D designs / 2D drawing outputs. These have been sent for machining, so we will get a true-to-life prototype in our hands soon. You can clearly see the DIY case on the lower-left, and a 3d printed model of the NextC case on the upper-right. The NextC case is *half* the thickness of the DIY case. Edge Heatsink & Fan The NextC case will come with a ultra-quiet Japanese cooling fan, and it also has a taller heatsink. If you're observant, you'll notice that the Edge heatsink has taller fins than the VIM heatsink. We're still running thermal performance tests, hopefully we can share them with you soon! Remember this YouTube video, yes? The only thing you'll hear is the air-noise, whooshing through; fan noise is non-existent (to my ears at least). We dislike fan noise as much as you do, so we hope we've got this issue completely solved now. Khadas Captain V11, Gestures + M.2 Slot (NVMe SSD) + Li-Po Battery Okay some new awesome photographs of the Khadas Captain board. Remember it's supposed to be a companion board to the Edge and Edge-1S, right? It has an M.2 slot (PCI-E) so you can plug an SSD to it, a gesture sensor for advanced HCI (human computer interface), and a built-in charging circuit for a Li-Po battery - fans of gaming rejoice! Dual Cameras For Edge-V and Captain Both Edge-V and Captain will be able to connect to dual 13 MegaPixel cameras for stereoscopic vision. This will be useful for facial recognition, machine vision, augmented reality, etc. Accessory Recap Okay so we're almost to the end of this blog post, just a quick photograph to recap all the accessories we have on hand so far: NextC Casing Captain Carrier Board LCD Touchscreen Edge IO (GPIO extension board for Edge) 13 MegaPixel Camera Lithium Polymer Battery Edge Heatsink Edge Cooling Fan We should add specifications for all these accessories into our homepage soon. So Much Power...In So Little Space Remember, all this stuff is being fitted to a single board computer, that's no bigger than a credit card. Really amazing! What You Can Do To Help We've got our pre-launch page setup on indiegogo.com, do help us spread the word to tell more Makers, Hackers and Developers about the Edge and to come and support our campaign by entering their email address. Here's the pre-launch link (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/rockchip-rk3399-khadas-edge-sbc/coming_soon) to share on social media, you can use the hashtag #khadas_edge on Facebook and Twitter, and our social media guy will take notice! Additionally, if you have any feedback, you can contact us at hello@khadas.com or use any of the forms on the khadas.com/edge page. Thank you for your attention, and lets make this project a success!

  • Audio Science Review - Measurements of Khadas Tone Board DAC

This is a review and detailed measurements of the Khadas Tone Board DAC. It is on kind loan from the company. The retail price on Amazon is USD $99 including free shipping. As the name indicates, this is a bare board DAC: Don't confuse this with Raspberry Pi boards though. This is a complete DAC and doesn't need a host to operate. It is just like any other desktop DAC except that it doesn't come with a case. The Khadas Tone Board is powered and accessed through the USB port and S/PDIF. For my review, I only tested the USB input. Output as you see is through a pair of RCA jacks that have a great high-quality look and feel (as does the S/PDIF one). It would be at home in DACs at much higher prices. Khadas sells two versions of this board, one of which mates with their host processor to make a complete networked DAC and player. They were kind enough to send me the host which I will review later. Let's get into measurements and see how well it does. Measurements As usual, we start with our dashboard view: I must say, I was not prepared for such excellent performance from such an unassuming board! Essentially 110 dB SINAD (signal above noise and distortion) in a $99 DAC? That is most excellent: I should have of course paid attention to the web page for this product: https://www.khadas.com/tone Right there is the same dashboard measurement with the same Audio Precision APx555 analyser I have with identical response! Their THD+N is 0.000337% and mine is 0.000331%. Wow, what consistency!!! This is a company that does things right, measuring and verifying designs. Continuing on with jitter and noise we get: There a lot of little spikes visible but that is partly due to very low noise floor which reveals more of these. Worst case spike is below -130 dBFS which is well below any threshold of audibility. Here is intermodulation distortion versus level: Here, we have typical response similar to what we get from other desktop DACs using ESS' later DAC chips. Dynamic Range comes next: This is very good but a bit shy of their numbers. This measurement though is very sensitive to such things as ground loop so in other situations it may be possible to get close to the 120 dB number they post. I have been asked for crosstalk measurements so here it is: The spec better than 127 dB and it definitely seems to be there at almost all frequencies. Crosstalk usually increases with frequency as we see in Schiit Modi 3 graph but here, the Khadas Tone Board maintains the same level throughout audio band which is excellent. Lastly, we have linearity test: I like to see less than 0.5 dB of deviation at -120 and Khadas Tone Board easily sails through that criteria. Conclusions Khadas contacted me and joined the forum immediately after someone mentioned this board as something to test. They quickly sent me the samples but due to my busy schedule, I was remiss in not testing it until now. I regret that delay seeing how well their product did in my testing. The Khadas Tone Board is a high performance DAC and a bargain price. It is exceptionally well engineered and easily earns my highest recommendation! Get your own case for it and tell your friends you designed it. :) That Khadas is active on forums and ready to support their owners is a fantastic bonus. • Introducing Khadas Edge-V | RK3399 SBC With VIM's Form Factor

Hi Everyone! So you may be wondering what's going on at Khadas HQ; well we're all really busy developing the Khadas Edge, and it's associated peripherals. We're keeping all of your feedback in mind, including the recent discussion on thermal dissipation. Just so you know we're always listening, here's some answers to the common questions that have cropped up so far: Q: What is the Edge-V? A: The Edge-V v10 is a VIM-form-factor board equipped with an RK3399 processor. It will be compatible with our current VIM Heatsink, Cooling Fan and DIY Case. This board will act as the development bridge between VIM2 and future Edge products, because the Edge software is also fully compatible with the Edge-V. Q: How is the development of the Edge coming along? A: At the moment, we're working on Edge v13, and the Edge-V v11. Each SBC that we develop has to go through multiple iterations to ensure quality and reliability - and this process takes time and effort. As you know, we only want the best for our users. Q: When will the Edge samples be ready, when will they be sent out? A: As part of our Forum Bonus Program, we're ready to send out 4 functional prototypes of the Edge v12 to the top 3 contributors on our forum by this coming Friday, the 14th of September, and 1 for people who share this blog post on Twitter with the hashtag #khadas_edge, and with the most retweets. We look forward to your contributions! Q: Besides Edge, what other devices will be included in your Indiegogo Campaign? A: Edge is meant to be both hackable and expandable, so it will come with lots of accessories. We're working on the camera, battery, Edge-heatsink, and LCD modules, in addition to the Captain carrier board. In addition, we have 2 stretch goals and 1 special product that will remain a secret for now. Q: When will more prototype Edge SBCs be shipped out for developers/reviewers? A: 10+ Edge-V v11 samples will be ready for sending out late-September. More Edge v13 and Captain samples will be ready around the same time as well. The Edge-V v11 board will have it's gesture sensor moved to the TP connector, and the TP connector would be put on the backside. Q: When do you expect to launch the Indiegogo Campaign? A: When we're ready and confident that our product has met the expectations of you guys! Our team is busy revising the Edge many times a month. We want to be sure that we will deliver a product that you will want to use. Q: Why did you delay the campaign from end-Sept to mid-Oct? A: We decided to delay the Indiegogo campaign because of Edge-V. Originally we had not planned to make the Edge-V. Instead the Edge was meant as an all-new-design. However, due to developer demand, the Edge-V is a bridging product, as it uses the same software as the Edge. Q: Will there be any early bird discounts, special products during the Indiegogo Campaign? A: Aha yes, we knew you'd want to hear about that! Well we're going to keep it a secret for now, and the only way to know about it is if you subscribe to our email newsletter - so do tell your friends to subscribe! Q: How can I be involved in the Edge development process? A: You're always welcome to tell us what you intend to use Edge for. In fact, the more you tell us your dreams, the more we can make products that will suit your projects and applications. Head over to our forum to tell us more Peace Out, Khadas Team
