Why Khadas Mind Has a Built-In Battery

A small battery lets this mini PC keep your work open between desks, ride out a loss of power, and run briefly without an outlet. Here is how it works.

Most mini PCs depend entirely on external power. Pull the plug while one is running and the computer loses power immediately, putting unsaved work at risk. Khadas Mind’s built-in battery lets you disconnect power without ending your session, so you can move between desks with your apps and documents still open.

It’s an unusual feature in a mini PC, especially one this compact, and TechRadar called it “a real innovation.”

A small battery with a specific job

Mind 1, Mind 2, and Mind 2S contain a 5.55Wh lithium-polymer battery. Mind Pro increases that capacity to 7.98Wh. These are small batteries compared with the tens of watt-hours typically found in a laptop, but they are sized primarily to preserve your session while the computer is unplugged.

Standby and active use are very different measures. Standby refers to preserving your session while the computer is asleep; it does not mean the PC can run applications for that length of time. Active runtime varies with workload and settings, and demanding tasks will drain the battery faster.

Keep your session open between desks

With Sleep selected in Mind App, Mind enters sleep about five seconds after external power is disconnected. The battery keeps the session in memory while you move. Reconnect power at your next workstation and Mind wakes with your applications and documents still open.

You can also select Hibernate, which saves the session to storage. Sleep favors a quick return to work; hibernation is useful for longer periods away from power. The behavior when you unplug Mind follows the mode selected in Mind App.

This is particularly useful if you already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse at home and at the office. You carry the computer between them and reconnect to the setup waiting at the other end. Since it is the same PC, there is no need to transfer files between machines or reopen your working documents just because you have changed desks.

The same applies within one building. Take Mind to a meeting room with a suitable display, or move it from a home office to another equipped workspace. Additional desks need peripherals and power, rather than a separate computer for each location.

Keep working briefly on battery power

Mind can also stay awake after you unplug it. To enable this before disconnecting power, open Mind App, find Device Mode When Unplugged, and select Use Battery.

In this mode, the system reduces power consumption and performance to extend runtime. Light tasks such as editing a document can continue, while heavy workloads are better left until external power is available again. You will still need a powered display and your input devices to interact with the PC.

The approximate active runtimes are 30 minutes for Mind 1, Mind 2, and Mind 2S, and 60 minutes for Mind Pro. When the battery drops below 20 percent, the system enters hibernation. Treat those figures as a short window to finish an immediate task, save your work, or find another power source.

Starting Mind from a full shutdown still requires external power. The internal battery is intended to support an existing session, with only limited time for active use.

Provide a buffer when power cuts out

An accidentally disconnected cable or an unexpected outage can stop a conventional mini PC instantly. Mind's battery provides a buffer, allowing the system to retain its session or enter the selected power mode instead of immediately losing power.

The battery powers the Mind unit itself. A monitor that loses mains power may still go dark, even while the computer preserves your session. The benefit is a lower risk of losing work to a sudden interruption; it does not remove the need to save regularly.

Why the battery stays small

A laptop-sized battery would add volume and weight, and require changes to the internal layout and cooling design. Carrying that extra capacity everywhere would work against Mind's role as a compact computer that moves easily between equipped desks.

For occasional longer sessions away from an outlet, a compatible USB-C PD power bank can provide additional runtime. Choose one that meets your Mind model's power requirements. You bring the extra battery when you need it, while Mind itself remains the same size and weight.

If you regularly work away from a desk, Mind xPlay is the more complete option. It adds a display, keyboard, touchpad, and a larger battery, giving Mind the hardware needed for use away from a fixed workstation.

As you can see, the built-in battery is a key part of Khadas Mind’s design. It lets you unplug a compact desktop, carry your session with you, and resume at the next setup. For people who work this way, that can be more useful than the battery’s modest capacity suggests.
