Why Khadas Mind?

2023, the year that everything changes

Consider the historical milestones that shaped modern computing. On a frosty February 14th in 1946, ENIAC, the world's inaugural computer, came into being in Pennsylvania, USA. A massive machine weighing over 30 tons, it marked a pivotal moment in the digital revolution.

Fast-forward to a warm August 12th in 1981, IBM introduced the IBM 5150, the first personal computer, heralding a new era of personalized computing.

Throughout the years, computing evolved into various forms, from desktops and mini PCs to laptops and tablets, each meticulously tailored to specific use cases for optimal user experience.

However, the challenge lies in the transition between these computing scenarios. The need to effortlessly switch between a desktop setup in the office, a portable solution on the move, and a seamless transition to conference rooms remains unmet.

Current computer users thus must make the following compromises:

1 - Thin and light notebooks: good portability, but performance is often not strong enough

2 - Gaming notebook: The performance is excellent, it also supports discrete graphics cards, but it is quite heavy and bulky

3 - Desktop: Extremely powerful, however it is also very large and heavy, not portable

In terms of ergonomics and workflow, these are the current pain points:

1 - For artists and designers (who often require both CPU and GPU performance), they only have two choices, either a desktop tower or gaming laptop. This limits their options if they wish to work remotely, or move their content to the conference room. Thus they require multiple devices to conduct their work.

2 – Sales professionals and business men who purchase laptops often grapple with the fact that the display is too small, and the shallow keyboard never feels as good as a conventional desktop keyboard. Because of this, very often they leave their laptops plugged into external displays and peripherals, making the internal display and keyboard redundant.

3 – Managerial professionals who often hold meetings do not have an ideal solution when it comes to conducting large online conferences, especially when there are is a mix of online and offline participants. Often the microphones on conventional laptops and smartphones are inadequate to differentiate between voices and background noise, thus making clear communication between remote teams very difficult.

4 – Digital nomads often love to travel light, as they frequently move from place to place. However, if one device isn’t able to satisfy their needs, they end up having to purchase three devices such as a laptop, tablet and smartphone. Multiple devices not only weigh them down, making travelling difficult, but also pose security risks from theft.

5 – Multiple devices cause chaos in workflows due to the frequent need to copy files from device to device. This makes file version tracking challenging, as users frequently copy the wrong version, thus affecting the overall workflow and reducing the efficiency of the entire team, locally and remotely. This issue is further compounded by those working in sensitive data environments whom are not allowed to access cloud-file-syncing technologies.

Our philosophy:

1 – We believe that people shouldn’t have to juggle multiple devices and various operating systems in their daily workflow.

2 – We believe that a computing device should adapt to our mind, rather than the user having to adapt to the unique limitations of each device.

3 – We believe that a company or school’s purchasing department shouldn’t have to make tough financial choices when choosing between purchasing different devices.

4 – We wish to design a computing device that is able to transform and adapt itself to blend seamlessly with every conceivable workflow and situation.

How does Khadas Mind solve these pain points?

1 – We have shrunk down the core computing unit, consisting of CPU, RAM, SSD and Wi-Fi into an extremely thin and light package, called the Mind. Despite its small size, it packs a powerful Intel i7 CPU, up to 32GB of RAM and up to 4TB of SSD storage.

2 – We have engineered an extremely high-speed and high-bandwidth Mind Link interface that allows rapid communication between the Mind and its external modules. The communication speed is equivalent to the external device being “on-board”.

3 – This Mind Link interface allows Mind to seamlessly connect with external modules that thus modify its hardware capabilities on-the-fly. For example, it can instantly transform from a workstation to a gaming desktop, to a portable 2-in-1 tablet.

4 – The core computing unit, Mind, also has a built-in battery. Thus, you can rapidly unplug it from one module and plug it into another module without having to close your open documents and shut down the computer.

Imagine the possibilities with the Mind Family:

The Mind Family consists of a core computing unit, called the Mind, which can link via the Mind Link interface to various modules. Thus, for example a graphic designer can use a single computer to perform all his daily tasks:

1 - When he works at his desk, he needs a high-performance GPU and large display. This is solved by slotting his Mind into the Mind Studio module.

2 - When he attends his daily meeting, he needs a very good video conferencing solution. This is solved by slotting his Mind into Mind Talk module.

3 - When he goes out to Starbucks, he needs a portable tablet so that he can paint his latest art and design. This is solved by slotting his Mind into the Mind xPlay module.

Mind Studio Module:

By docking Khadas Mind into the Mind Studio, designers immediately have an expansive touchscreen display and powerful GPU for painting or 3D design needs.

Mind Dock Module:

Combine Mind with Mind Dock, to effortlessly achieve a personalized multi-monitor desktop office setup, tailored to your work needs.

Mind xPlay Module:

Combine Mind with xPlay, and you have an on-the-go mobile office, empowering you to work anywhere, anytime - meet your clients outside the office!

Mind Talk Module:

Embrace the seamless transition from your desk to the conference room with Mind and Mind Talk, enhancing your productivity during meetings.

Remember that although each module appears to be a discrete device, it is really a single computer, the Khadas Mind, moving between these modules. This concept significantly alters your computing experience, by allowing you to use a single computer in multiple scenarios removing the need of transferring and converting your files from one device to another. This concept isn’t just revolutionary, it is liberating.

The Khadas Mind is thus a transformative and grand vision that we, Khadas Team, embark on this journey with unyielding passion. We are resolute in our mission to bring the Khadas Mind to market, fueled by the unwavering belief in our dreams. Challenges may arise, but we will never waver.
